Here’s Whats Included in Course 2

Course 2 - The Step by Step Support Path

This course gives you immediate direction. It’s about changing the way you think about addiction, start approaching it as a family issue and learn how to create a family environment that maintains long-term recovery. It consists of six thorough lessons (that include videos, PDFs, journaling exercises and recommended reading) which you can take at your own pace

  • Lesson 1: Getting Started

You’ll begin by setting your goals for this course and challenging your assumptions about addiction. You’ll learn how to make the most of the Step by Step Support Path course and the Family Matters community. You’ll also find some recommended reading and download your exercise workbook.

  • Lesson 2: Choosing Life

You’ll focus on understanding your family system and the part you play in various relationship patterns. You’ll be asked to draw a family diagram and then think (and journal) about your own values. You’ll also learn about integrating beliefs with behavior.

  • Lesson 3: A Wide-Angle Lens

You will take the journey towards a spiritual awakening. In this lesson you will become better acquainted with the ideas behind Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12-step program. You’ll also continue to examine relationship patterns within the family (like emotional triangles and how to navigate them) and understand the concept of “family anxiety”. Finally, you will watch some documentaries about addictions and do a moral inventory in your journal.

  • Lesson 4: Shifting Focus

You will review the ways in which you can change some of your behaviors or thinking and journal as you observe your own behaviors. You’ll follow self-reflection guidelines in order to learn how to shift your part in an emotional triangle. You’ll also learn what it means to be a leader in your family — and how to identify the H.A.L.T. conditions that contribute to difficulties in managing emotions. You will also learn how to find a good Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meeting and how to find a good sponsor.

  • Lesson 5: Investing in Sobriety

You'll learn all about emotional cut offs and how to bridge them (by making and receiving amends). You’ll also get guidelines for clear communication, learn how to rebuild trust and make decisions based on principles.

  • Lesson 6: Moving Forward

You will review the ideas that will help you keep moving in the right direction (like the concept of forgiveness as a process). You will also explore mindfulness and breath prayer. This lesson also offers insights on how to find a good sober living house — as well as a therapist that will help you move forward. You will finally get all the resources you need so that you yourself can become a resource for your family.
