I recently consulted with a couple who wished to gain clarity regarding their 45 yr. old son who they continued to support financially. They had a litany of reasons to justify why they had done this over the years and they had some awareness that their actions simply delayed the inevitable; that their son would need to learn how to fend for himself just the way his ancestors had done. Their difficulty lay in not being able to be emotionally connected while remaining financially separate. The guilt and pain of watching him suffer and their inability to tolerate the onslaught of accusations when they made even feeble attempts to become more mature financially led to one or the other of them to either attempt to cut him off entirely or simply give in to his demands. In our half hour consultation I helped them craft a principled response to his latest financial demands that was both firm and reflected their emotional support. I aided them in being prepared for the predictable backlash and how to respond in a way that didn’t further escalate or encourage more tirades. Thinking clearly in the midst of pressure is very difficult and perhaps impossible for most of us without the clear principles of theory to guide.

We offer the Family Matters Program in various formats due to the uniqueness of the program and unknowability of how it will be utilized to deal with a problem that has plagued the human family for millennia. Our thinking must change so that sustainable behavioral changes can be fostered. Personal leadership, the kind that doesn’t tell others what they must do, will lead to firm resolute positions that bring clarity and promote resilience.
