Family Addiction Counselling- Course 2

The Step by Step Support Path

Find emotional freedom in this comprehensive plan for positive change

Your loved one doesn’t have to hit bottom for you to take action. Besides, hitting bottom may mean different things for different people. (And what do you do about hitting rock bottom?) Our Step by Step Support Path is ideal for when you’re ready to be proactive and make lasting changes.

This course is about changing the way you think about addiction; to get out of the “blame” mindset and start approaching this systemically, as a family issue. You’ll learn how to create a family environment that maintains long-term recovery, by letting your own sanity rule your home — not your loved one’s addiction.

The Step by Step Support Path includes 6 lessons that you can take at your own pace, each with bite-sized activities designed to help you toward emotional freedom. We have also included handouts, recommended readings, videos and other valuable resources. In addition, you can participate in the Family Matters Facebook Community, you’ll be able to ask questions, get feedback and connect with people who are going through a similar experience as you.

You have lifetime access to the training, so you can go through the material each week as it's released in the student portal, or you can slow things down and work at your own pace.

This course is for you if you are:

  • A concerned spouse, parent, grandparent or close relative, worrying about a loved one who suffers from addiction and looking for the tools to help them.
  • Responsible for a minor who may engaged in problematic drinking or substance use.
  • Responsible for an adult who is financially dependent on you (to pay for treatments, bail them out of jail, etc).
  • Trying to understand all the different scenarios that can take place during a SUD-related crisis (having a spouse in jail, needing to leave the house fast if they visit you under the influence, asking you to call into work).
  • Co-parenting with an ex who suffers from addiction and worried about how  their addiction may affect  your kids (like driving them while under the influence).
  • Afraid your loved one will face jail or worse, death.

This course will enable you to:

  • Learn the signs of addiction.
  • Understand what actions you can take so that you can make decisions with less uncertainty and doubt.
  • Build a toolkit with practical resources designed to help you address a variety of common crisis situations (like negotiating with hospitals).

Course 2 - The Step by Step Support Path

This course gives you immediate direction. It’s about changing the way you think about addiction, start approaching it as a family issue and learn how to create a family environment that maintains long-term recovery. It consists of six thorough lessons (that include videos, PDFs, journaling exercises and recommended reading) which you can take at your own pace

  • Lesson 1: Getting Started

You’ll begin by setting your goals for this course and challenging your assumptions about addiction. You’ll learn how to make the most of the Step by Step Support Path course and the Family Matters community. You’ll also find some recommended reading and download your exercise workbook.

  • Lesson 2: Choosing Life

You’ll focus on understanding your family system and the part you play in various relationship patterns. You’ll be asked to draw a family diagram and then think (and journal) about your own values. You’ll also learn about integrating beliefs with behavior.

  • Lesson 3: A Wide-Angle Lens

You will take the journey towards a spiritual awakening. In this lesson you will become better acquainted with the ideas behind Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12-step program. You’ll also continue to examine relationship patterns within the family (like emotional triangles and how to navigate them) and understand the concept of “family anxiety”. Finally, you will watch some documentaries about addictions and do a moral inventory in your journal.

  • Lesson 4: Shifting Focus

You will review the ways in which you can change some of your behaviors or thinking and journal as you observe your own behaviors. You’ll follow self-reflection guidelines in order to learn how to shift your part in an emotional triangle. You’ll also learn what it means to be a leader in your family — and how to identify the H.A.L.T. conditions that contribute to difficulties in managing emotions. You will also learn how to find a good Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meeting and how to find a good sponsor.

  • Lesson 5: Investing in Sobriety

You'll learn all about emotional cut offs and how to bridge them (by making and receiving amends). You’ll also get guidelines for clear communication, learn how to rebuild trust and make decisions based on principles.

  • Lesson 6: Moving Forward

You will review the ideas that will help you keep moving in the right direction (like the concept of forgiveness as a process). You will also explore mindfulness and breath prayer. This lesson also offers insights on how to find a good sober living house — as well as a therapist that will help you move forward. You will finally get all the resources you need so that you yourself can become a resource for your family.

"Thank you for making these online courses available. What a wonderful resource it has been! Rich with information and on such an easy and accessible platform."

"Our daughter, following major scoliosis back surgery, continued to use Percocet and eventually began snorting heroin while at college. She admits that it was a matter of time before she would have been injecting as a cost/efficiency measure. Thanks to the program, we recognized the signs and knew what we should do. Our daughter agreed to go to a residential rehab without putting up a fight. That's almost 3 years ago now. The principles Dund in the Family Matters Program helped us get clear and prevented more damage from taking place."

"Thank you so much for giving me access to this content. It has been such a gift and incredibly helpful already. I've shared it with some family members and hopefully they'll be able to use these resources as well."
